Interconnected Evolution…it takes a minute to really absorb the words. Evolution represents lasting change over time that moves something toward the highest incarnation of itself. And Interconnected which is not just a one-to-one connection between two beings (connected) but instead multiple connections across many beings (interconnected) like the web of life.

When our Creative Engagement team gathered to pick a theme for this year’s Creative Aging Symposium, we wanted to represent the strength and adaptability we are seeing in the communities we serve, groups of people who are seeking meaning, belonging, and the power to create the world in which they want to live. That power responds to the ever shifting challenges we all face and in turn is producing creative innovations to overcome the isolation and loneliness that so easily plague modern humans, especially older adults.

So, we explored trending themes we are seeing right now like belonging, innovation, interconnectedness, interdependence, healthy aging ecosystem, digital inclusion, intergenerational collaboration, collective care models, holistic well-being, and co-creation with older adults. And the thread running through all of it was this sense of all of us in this human experience together trying to love and support each other in expressing that humanness as authentically as possible for the well-being of all.

Personally, I reflect back on my experience with creativity in communal settings, specifically an intuitive painting retreat in which I participated in recent years. This retreat was a space set aside for the participants to explore their creative voice without judgment or explanation. I certainly could have spent the same amount of time painting on my own, but I found that the group setting empowered me in ways impossible on my own.

First, the social support of having other people around me with the same purpose kept me committed to the work. Second, listening to others share their thoughts and experiences amplified my sense of connection and belonging knowing I wasn’t alone in my struggles with trusting my own creative voice. And finally, as I found my own breakthroughs and “AHA!” moments, having a community to witness and celebrate with me solidified the changes I was making and helped me carry them forward in my own personal evolution. The power of the group moved all of us forward exponentially.

In addition, I was reminded at this retreat by the facilitator that it was an opportunity for us to create the type of world we want to live in every day for at least a short time. In this case, a world of comradery, the creatively weird, and non-judgment of our innate human vulnerability. This experience is just one of thousands of moments in my life when I have witnessed the connection and growth that comes with sharing creatively with others. Not only do we grow as individuals, but as a group we are planting the seeds for humanity to move forward in its evolution. Our vision of a creatively alive world takes a step forward with every gathering.

So, with these experiences in mind, our team concluded that Interconnected Evolution best represented this concept of innovative creativity for the greater good. We want to gather others with the same strong intention and resulting action to explore, grow, connect, and find joy in each other’s creativity. We hope you will join us as we take another step forward in our evolution at the 2026 Creative Aging Symposium. Some of our favorite creative community builders will be sharing their meaningful work and inviting all of us to join in on hands-on experiences. Come get inspired, energized, and connected! Together we are greater!
